Change is a constant in both our professional and personal lives. Whether it is a new job, a move, or changes in relationships, For some, it is exciting, while for others, it can feel overwhelming. Sometimes change can fall at a difficult time in our life and this can affect how we react to it.

Learning how to manage and approach change is essential for our well-being. Read on to find out more about how change can affect us and our lives, and some simple strategies to help you to navigate these shifts.

The Stages of Change

You may recognise some of these common stages of change below

  1. Denial: Minimizing the change or refusing to accept it. (the system we have already is fine, there is no need to disrupt everything)

  2. Resistance: Combating the change due to fear of the unknown. ( I won't put myself forward for the first round of training , I will just wait until others have done it)

  3. Exploration: Gradually recognizing change and considering new possibilities. (I will attend the training day and see what all the fuss is about)

  4. Commitment: Fully embracing change and integrating new methods into your life. (it has taken a while to get to grips with but the new system makes doing x,y & z so much easier!)

So what can we do to help us better cope with change?

Acknowledge your feelings

Facing change even positive change can stir up a range of emotions . Initially, many people feel anxiety or fear about what lies ahead & the unknown.

The first thing is to acknowledge your feelings, it is perfectly normal to feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed. Validating your emotions allows you to process them and can facilitate a smoother transition. For instance, journaling about your feelings might help you better understand what you are experiencing and why.

The NHS - Every Mind Matters has 10 steps on how to manage change including videos on muscle relaxation, mindful breathing and reframing unhelpful thoughts.

Those 10 steps are:

  1. Take stock of how you feel

  2. Focus on the short term

  3. Acknowledge whats working

  4. Recognise your acheivements (however big or small)

  5. Find a new rhythm, routine

  6. Try to stay in the moment

  7. Reframe your thoughts

  8. Decide what strategies work for you

  9. Only do whats comfortable

  10. Get practical advice

Of course step 9 is not always possible. Some changes may occur which are beyond our control a bereavement for example. In these situations it is important to give yourself time, to practice self care and focus on those things you can control.

Understanding that change is a natural part of life is crucial. Acceptance can enhance mental health and overall well-being. According to research, individuals who embrace change report 60% higher happiness levels. The more we practice acceptance, the better we become at handling future transitions.

Change and Personal Growth

Change often drives personal and professional growth. It can push you to re-evaluate your priorities, learn new skills, or take risks that lead to fulfilling experiences.

For instance, taking on a new role may require you to learn advanced software, prompting you to take a workshop. According to LinkedIn, employees who engage in continuous learning are 37% more likely to report job satisfaction. This not only enhances your skills but also boosts your confidence and opens new doors.

Final Thoughts

Life is a continual journey filled with changes, both at work and in our personal lives. Learning to adapt, manage and embrace these changes equips us with the tools to handle life's transitions and could open doors to new opportunities and growth.

By taking a proactive approach, practicing those 10 steps and maintaining open communication, we can navigate the unknown more smoothly. It is not the change itself that shapes our experience; rather, it is how we choose to respond to it. Welcoming change can lead to a more enriched and fulfilling life.

Navigating change can seem daunting, but with the right mindset and strategies, it can also be a transformative experience. The next time change arrives, be ready to embrace it and see where the journey leads.
